Public sector decarbonisation

The Hub has introduced a dedicated programme supporting the local public sector with improving the energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation of their own buildings – cutting costs while reducing carbon emissions.

Public sector organisations are committed to lowering their energy consumption and costs – but one of the biggest obstacles they face is their own buildings.

Many public buildings still rely on fossil fuel heating systems or were built in much less energy efficient eras.

Many organisations also lack the resources to develop the projects which will cut the cost of heating and powering public buildings while reducing carbon emissions.

The North East and Yorkshire Net Zero Hub has established a programme to work directly with public sector organisations to help them decarbonise their estates and identify sources of funding.

North East Public Estate Decarbonisation Programme

The team can provide free advice and support, including:

  • Developing and implementing a clean and efficient energy strategy and plan
  • Collating and analysing building information and energy data to inform strategies and plans
  • Reducing energy use and carbon emissions through building management and energy reporting
  • Installing energy efficiency upgrades to provide significant savings
  • Introducing low carbon heat technologies such as heat pumps to replace fossil fuel boilers
  • Connection to or development of a heat network
  • Generation of renewable power from solar panels

The public sector organisations we work with include:

  • Local authorities
  • Emergency services
  • NHS trusts
  • Multi-academy trusts and schools
  • Higher education institutions
  • Central government departments

Workshops

We also deliver regular online and in-person workshops aimed at driving collaboration, sharing knowledge and upskilling staff.

The next workshops are as follows:

  • Energy Management Systems Workshop for Local Authorities (Thursday April 16th, 11am)

In this session Niamh Allen from Sustainable Smart Technologies (Sustainable Smart Technologies – We are building intelligence) will discuss their approach to generating significant cost and carbon savings through  Energy Management Systems.

If you would like to attend this meeting, please email neyped@westyorks-ca.gov.uk, and we will forward you the invitation.

  • Building Management Systems Workshop for NHS Trusts (Thursday April 23rd, 11am)

This session will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with BMS, including common barriers to implementation, potential efficiency savings, and how Trusts can strengthen their approach to managing building performance to generate cost and carbon savings.

This will be an interactive session to support shared learning across NHS Trusts. Participants will have the opportunity to share practical experience of using or implementing BMS, discuss challenges (technical, financial, organisational, or operational) and explore solutions and best practice.

David Coxon from Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be sharing insights from their experience implementing and optimising BMS. David will also outline the important differences between Building Management Systems (BMS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS), helping Trusts better understand how these systems can work together in achieving carbon and cost reduction, alongside Net Zero targets.
